Macrame, an ancient craft, has journeyed through history to establish itself as a popular choice in modern jewellery. This knotting technique has seamlessly evolved, adapting to contemporary fashion while retaining its traditional charm. Let’s explore how macrame transitioned from its humble beginnings to the world of stylish accessories.
The Origins of Macrame
Macrame dates back to 13th-century Arabia, where skilled artisans used knots to create elaborate patterns on textiles. The word "macrame" originates from the Arabic "migramah," meaning "fringe." Initially, macrame adorned household items such as curtains and towels, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. Over time, these knotting techniques spread across Europe and other parts of the world, gaining popularity for their decorative appeal.
Macrame in Modern Jewellery
Fast forward to the 1970s, macrame saw a revival during the bohemian movement. It was during this period that macrame evolved from household decor to wearable art. Today, it is widely used in handmade macrame jewellery, including boho-style necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Artisans now incorporate durable materials like nylon cords and vibrant beads to create timeless pieces. These contemporary designs preserve the beauty of traditional knotting while appealing to modern aesthetics. [Link to boho macrame jewellery collection.]

Macrame Jewellery at The Yarn Artisan Store
I started creating macrame jewellery from 2020 and it was my escape from the claustrophobia that the CoVID lockdown created in the next couple of years. Most of my initial designs were inspired by those taught by the wonderful artisans in Europe and South America and while I loved them all, I did not completely relate to them. But as the years passed and my expertise grew, I could take on challenging projects and Indian contemporary and historical jewellery designs became my muses. I recreated traditional portrait jewellery designs, jadau designs, and temple designs in macrame and the versatility of this craft just takes my breath away, each time. My creation style is therefore eclectic, and blends Indian tradition with the boho-modernity of macrame.
The Future of Macrame
The resurgence of macrame shows no signs of slowing down. As people increasingly seek sustainable and artistic jewellery options, macrame offers the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. With its versatility and eco-friendly appeal, macrame jewellery continues to capture hearts worldwide. [Link to macrame jewellery designs.]
