The nicest thing about jewellery made from thread is that it does not have to stay the colour you first saw it in.
Nearly every custom order starts the same way: someone sends me a photo of an outfit and asks whether I can make something to go with it.
The answer is almost always yes — but the useful conversation is about which direction, not which shade. So here are the eight colour stories I keep coming back to, each with a piece already made in it.
Find the one closest to what you are planning to wear, and tell me the number. That is enough for me to start from.
A custom macramé piece takes about three weeks to make, and a few days more to reach you. Diwali is on 8 November. Counting backwards, the 14th is the last date I can promise. After that I would rather say no than say yes and miss it.

Gold, Maroon and Pearl
The one that looks inherited.
The safest of the eight, and the one most people ask for without knowing the name for it. Gold yarn with maroon glass and off-white pearls reads as temple jewellery from a distance and as something quite different up close. Works against almost any silk.
Champa Multicolour Stone Macramé Set
A hand-knotted recreation of a traditional navratna necklace. Ask for it in a single stone colour instead of seven and it changes completely.

For the evening, not the afternoon.
Black macramé is the most underrated base I work with. It makes coloured stones look lit from inside, and it flatters more outfits than gold does. Choose this if your festive wardrobe runs to deep colours rather than bright ones.

Restraint with one thing allowed to shout.
Nearly all ivory, with a single saturated colour doing the work — magenta, or emerald, or a deep blue. Good for daytime functions and for anyone who finds full colour too much. It also photographs better than almost anything else I make.

A quiet thread palette so a semiprecious stone can carry the piece. Elephant jasper, labradorite, tiger eye, sunstone — each one different, which is rather the point. If you have a stone you love, this is the direction to ask for.

Cool colours, and no metal at all.
Worked entirely in thread with barely a bead. Nothing metal anywhere in it, which makes it light to wear for a full evening and safe for anyone who reacts to metal. Cool palettes sit beautifully against silver zari.

Navy, turquoise and light blue knotted throughout, with a single bead at the centre. No metal in the piece at all.

Six colours, and somehow not chaos.
Roses knotted in magenta, rose pink, orange, rust, cream and green. This is the maximalist end of what I do, and it works because every colour in it is warm. If you want many colours, keeping them all on one side of the wheel is what stops it going wrong.

Yellow is the colour people ask for at festivals and then style the obvious way, with gold. Put it against off-white, or against blue, and it stops looking like everyone else's haldi jewellery.

1. You send a photo
The outfit, a swatch, a Pinterest image, a sketch — whatever you have. Or just the number of a palette from this guide.
2. I come back with a direction
What is possible, which stones, what length, and a price. Nothing is confirmed until you have seen it written down.
3. About three weeks of making
These are knotted by hand, one at a time, by me. A full set is usually forty to sixty hours of work spread across those weeks.
4. It arrives, and it is yours alone
No two are ever repeated, and nothing is made twice in the same colours.
